Cavtat grew from the ancient Epidaurus, a Roman colony over 2,000 years old. You will learn how this important settlement declined and why its traces are barely visible today. The story will take you through turbulent times, from the Roman era to the Middle Ages, when Cavtat was an important part of the Republic of Dubrovnik.
During this free storytelling tour, an experienced guide will take you through the rich history of Cavtat, revealing interesting details and anecdotes. You will learn more about Epidaurus, its demise and rebirth as Cavtat. There will also be talk about two giants of Croatian art, their life and work, and their impact on Cavtat.
The first artist, the founder of Croatian modernism, Vlaho Bukovac, is a distinctive painter who painted more than 1,000 paintings, immortalizing the beauties of Cavtat and its surroundings. His works, full of life and color, testify to his love for this region.
The second giant, Ivan Meštrović, one of the most famous Croatian sculptors, carved an amazing testimony of love and death in his architectural masterpiece in Cavtat. His work, located in a prominent place, attracts visitors from all over the world with its beauty and symbolism.
